20th Century Heritage – Second Class World Heritage?20th century heritage is underrepresented on the UNESCO World Heritage List. According to the ICOMOS Report und Action Plan, Filling the Gaps“ (2004/2005), 20th century heritage makes up less than three percent of all 800 World Heritage sites. Nominations for 20th century sites are also seldom on the tentative lists of the signatory countries of the World Heritage Convention. No mention is made of key buildings by the Russian avant-garde or the influential models that shaped Stalinist architecture.
Das Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts – Welterbe zweiter Klasse?Das Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts ist auf der Welterbeliste der UNESCO unterrepräsentiert. Der ICOMOS-Report und Action-Plan „Filling the Gaps“ geht davon aus, dass weniger als drei Prozent der über 850 Welterbestätten dem 20. Jahrhundert zuzurechnen sind. Auch auf den Tentativlisten der Unterzeichnerstaaten der Welterbekonvention haben Nominierungs-vorschläge des 20. Jahrhunderts Seltenheitswert. So sind beispielsweise Schlüsselbauten der russischen Avantgarde ebenso wenig auf der Welterbeliste vertreten wie die einflussreichen Leitbilder der stalinistischen Architekturdoktrin.
The Heritage of the 20th Century – Breaking New Ground in Heritage Preservation? In comparison with that of earlier centuries the relatively young 20th century heritage seems to bring up certain problems of assessment. Apart from questions about its antiquarian value and aspects of historical and cultural meanings, this young heritage can also confront specialists with new problems of preservation and restoration. Novel building materials and experimental building structures, innovative and industrial building materials, poor durability and repairability of modern methods of construction represent a serious challenge. Health and energy risks, together with entirely altered functional demands can gravely impede the preservation and care of 20th century heritage using traditional methods of preservation and restoration.
Das europäische Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts – eine ICOMOS-Initiative Das junge Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts wirft offensichtlich im Vergleich mit Zeugnissen vorausgegangener Jahrhunderte spezielle Bewertungsprobleme auf. Neben Fragen nach dem Alterswert und Aspekten der jeweiligen historischen und kulturellen Bedeutung stellt dieses junge Erbe die Verantwortlichen womöglich auch vor besondere konservatorische und restauratorische Probleme. Neuartige Baustoffe und experimentelle Baukonstruktionen, innovative und industriell hergestellte Baumaterialen, mangelnde Dauerhaftigkeit und Reparaturtauglichkeit der modernen Bauweise, aber auch energietechnische oder gesundheitliche Risiken sowie total veränderte Funktionsanforderungen können die dauerhafte Erhaltung und Pflege von Zeugnissen des 20. Jahrhunderts mit herkömmlichen Mitteln der Denkmalpflege und Denkmalrestaurierung gravierend erschweren.

ICOMOS 2007 Berlin – A 20th Century Metropolis Germany is represented on the World Heritage List with over thirty sites, including prominent 20th century monuments such as parts of the Völklinger Hütte, the Bauhausstätten in Weimar and Dessau, and the Zeche Zollverein in Essen. Further 20th century monuments are at the nomination stage or included in the new tentative list of the Federal Republic of Germany, such as the six settlements of the Berliner Moderne, a Le Corbusier House of the Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart, the Faguswerke by Walter Gropius in Alfeld, and the Chilehaus with the Kontorhausviertel in Hamburg. Berlin is rich in 20th century historical, cultural, and architectural monuments. The AEG -Turbinenhalle of Peter Behrens (1909) and the renowned modernist buildings of Erich Mendelsohn, Mies van der Rohe, Bruno Taut and Hans Scharoun belong to as well as buildings resulting from rival architectural ideologies of the post-war period.
Berlin – eine Metropole des 20. JahrhundertsDeutschland ist mit über 30 Positionen auf der Welterbeliste vertreten, darunter auch mit prominenten Denkmalen des 20. Jahrhunderts wie Teilen der Völklinger Hütte, den Bauhausstätten Weimar und Dessau und der Zeche Zollverein in Essen. Weitere Denkmale des 20. Jahrhunderts befinden sich im Nominierungsverfahren oder sind auf der aktuellen Tentativliste der Bundesrepublik Deutschland dafür vorgemerkt, wie die Sechs Siedlungen der Berliner Moderne, ein Le Corbusier-Haus der Weißenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart oder die Faguswerke von Walter Gropius in Alfeld und das Chilehaus mit dem Kontorhausviertel in Hamburg. Berlin ist reich an Geschichts- und Kunstdenkmalen sowie Architekturdenkmalen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die AEG-Turbinenhalle von Peter Behrens (1909) und bekannte Bauzeugnisse der Moderne von Erich Mendelssohn, Mies van der Rohe, Bruno Taut und Hans Scharoun gehören dazu.
European Heritage of the 20th Century — An ICOMOS InitiativeThe conference „World Heritage Sites of the 20th Century. Gaps and Risks from a European Point of View“, planned by ICOMOS Germany in co-operation with the Heritage Conservation Authority Berlin and the International Scientific ICOMOS Committee for the Heritage of the 20th Century, is conceived as a European follow-up conference to the World Conference in Moscow, „Heritage at Risk. Preservation of 20th Century Architecture and World Heritage“, which was held in 2006. The conference marks the European Heritage Days in September 2007 and will facilitate the transnational exchange of experience between conservators, restorers, architects and historians on the subject of 20th century heritage.

Jahrhunderts – eine ICOMOS-InitiativeDie von ICOMOS Deutschland in Verbindung mit dem Landesdenkmalamt Berlin und dem Internationalen Wissenschaftlichen ICOMOS-Komitee für das Erbe des 20. Jahrhunderts geplante Konferenz „World Heritage Sites of the 20th Century. Gaps and Risks from a European Point of View“ versteht sich als europäische Nachfolge-Konferenz der Moskauer Weltkonferenz vom April 2006 „Heritage at Risk. Preservation of 20th Century Architecture and World Heritage”. Sie findet anlässlich der European Heritage Days im September 2007 statt und soll dem grenzüberschreitenden Erfahrungsaustausch von Konservatoren und Restauratoren, Architekten und Historikern auf dem Gebiet des Erbes des 20. Jahrhunderts dienen.
